Clearance rates for nonfatal shootings in 2022

A Marshall Project analysis of police data from the most populous U.S. cities shows that none reported nonfatal shooting clearance rates higher than Denver’s and some were well below.

†The Seattle police department provided clearance data but unlike other cities, declined to confirm whether their most common categories, "other" and "referred,” includes the arrest or issuance of a warrant for a suspect.

Of cities that provided data, Philadelphia, Pa., Fort Worth, Texas, Los Angeles, Calif., and Dallas, Texas calculate clearances by victim; the other displayed cities calculate clearances by incident.

Columbus, Ohio, Jacksonville, Fla., Oklahoma City, Okla., Phoenix, Ariz., San Antonio, Texas, San Diego, Calif., and San Jose, Calif. do not track non-fatal shootings in such a way that they can calculate their clearance rate. Charlotte-Mecklenbug, N.C. failed to provide requested public records in a timely manner.
