Number of expungement applications

In the five years before the pandemic, the Attorney General’s office averaged fewer than 3,100 applications for expungement of criminal records annually. In the first four months of this year, the number of applications exceed the pre-pandemic annual average. A 2020 law loosening restrictions on expungements went into effect in April 2021.

* County courts were closed for much of 2020 due to COVID-19, leading to a drastic reduction in expungement applications. ** Total number of applications from Jan. 1 through April 30 of this year.
