Changes in Views of Worst Tax, by Political Party
Which do you think is the worst tax -- that is, the least fair -- [ROTATED: federal income tax, federal Social Security tax, state income tax, state sales tax (or) local property tax]?
Bar graph. View of Worst or Least Fair Tax, by Political Party. Republicans are much more likely now than in 2005 to say the federal income tax is the least fair tax, increasing from 16% to 41%. Republicans are less likely to view the federal Social Security tax and state sales tax as the least fair. Independents are also much more likely to view the federal income tax as the least fair, increasing from 21% to 34%. Independents are less likely to see the state sales tax and property tax as the least fair. Democrats' opinions of the federal income tax have not changed. They are less likely to view the property tax as least fair and more likely to view the state sales tax as least fair.
