For dry van per-mile linehaul rates (red on the chart), excluding an average fuel surcharge, trucking nationally looked to be in correction territory, with an average rate low not seen since before the period shown on the chart. This past week's average dry van rate matched that seen on the spot market in early August 2021, according to DAT Freight & Analytics, yet still above the good months of the beginning of the rates surge in mid-late 2020. All-in rates for vans, including those fuel surcharges, meanwhile, sat at $2.96. The picture for reefers was similar with the foot coming off the rates fuel pedal in March, losing about 30 cents a mile. Spot flatbed rates hold strong, however, for now.
