The stronger the lightning strike, the bigger the fulgurite “fossil” it leaves behind in sand. Based on the size of these hollow glassy tubes, researchers calculated the energy in an average strike to be in the tens of gigawatts. Large strikes were much larger than average, while smaller strikes were not much smaller than average. This is a lognormal trend.
