Demographic changes worked in SFUSD's favor during the pandemic but have since worked against SFUSD.

The change in the ELA score for SFUSD's 3rd graders during the pandemic (i.e. 2019-2022) and after (i.e. 2022-2024) is decomposed into a change due to the evolving sizes of SFUSD's demographic subgroups and a change due to the scores of each of those subgroups.

CDE publishes the number of students and average score for each of 16 demographic subgroups (8 ethnic/racial groups each with 2 socioeconomic levels). Demographic change measures the change in the SBAC score that is due to the changing percentages in each subgroup. Subgroup scores is the observed change in the aggregate SBAC score minus the amount due to demographic change.
