Figure 3.4.5 - Pedestrian Fatalities as a Percent of All Traffic Fatalities (2019-2023)

Pedestrian fatalities account for 15% or more of all traffic fatalities in every cities included in the Benchmarking project. The 15% threshold is used in several federal transportation policies and for cities, it impacts whether the Highway Safety Improvement Program must be used for biking and walking safety.

This figure shows the average number of pedestrian deaths, average number of total traffic deaths, and the percentage of total traffic deaths represented by pedestrian deaths for the time period of 2019 to 2023 for 76 cities.
