Coral cover in the Caribbean has declined dramatically while seaweed has increased

The average coral and seaweed (macroalgae) cover, or extent, across dozens of locations in the Caribbean for three time intervals.

The time periods were partitioned based on major ecological events in the Caribbean. Around 1983, a disease began wiping out sea urchins that graze on algae. The late ’90s and onward mark periods of frequent marine heat waves and bleaching.
