Who will see a sunrise before 8am? Almost no-one

Permanent daylight savings time (DST) means only around one in eight Americans would see sunrise before 8am on the winter solstice, compared to almost all everyone under the current time system.

Calculated for 2024 northern hemisphere winter solstice, urban population of the contiguous United States. The solstice is the shortest day of the year, but most Americans would still see sunrise before 8am during other months, even under permanent DST.
