California: where are wages the highest and lowest?

Median and average wages in California across all occupations are considerably higher in the major metro markets of the greater San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California than in the San Joaquin Valley.

Estimates are for May 2017. "Average" wages reflect the mathematical mean of all wage earners in a region; the median is the midpoint at which half of workers make more and half make less.
