Political violence has escalated in the Middle East

These are the hotspots outside of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories — Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen. While tensions had been brewing long before October 7, political violence has increased across the region.

A map of the Middle East region shows several countries shaded according to the number of incidents of political violence between October 7, 2023 and January 19, 2024. It shows Palestinian Territories shaded darkest, then Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen and Israel.
This map compiles the monthly totals of political violence incidents including battles, explosions and violence against civilians. It includes all actors including state forces such as military and police as well as armed militant groups.
