CBC identified a writer as Canadian if they are currently a member of a national professional writers union (WUC or UNEQ), or were nominated for one of the following literary recognitions: the Governor General's Literary Awards (English/French), Scotiabank Giller Prize, Trillium Book Award, CBC's Canada Reads, or the Writers' Trust of Canada Award.

To identify authors, CBC News extracted ISBN codes from text files in Books3 and ran them through a REST API database to obtain book title, author(s), publisher, language and other details. When an ISBN could not be retrieved, CBC News used the book title and author(s) included in the file's name, where available. Approximately 4.5 per cent of files could not be identified. Every author match was verified against book titles and the author's country of citizenship, place of birth and biography to ensure that writers with the same name living in another country weren't included.
