The Two Pillars of Cervical Cancer Prevention: Screening and Vaccination, 2019
In 2019, coverage varied dramatically across LAC, and high performance in one pillar did not guarantee high performance in the other. Costa Rica led HPV vaccination at 98%, while the Dominican Republic reached just 10%. St. Vincent achieved 89% screening but only 11% vaccination; Chile managed 94% vaccination but just 46% screening.
Scatter plot with cervical cancer screening coverage on the x-axis (0-100%) and HPV vaccination first-dose coverage on the y-axis (0-100%), showing 28 LAC countries labeled by ISO code. Dashed crosshair lines at roughly 50% on each axis divide the chart into four quadrants. The upper-right quadrant (high on both) contains Costa Rica (CRI, 76% screening, 98% vaccination), St. Kitts & Nevis (KNA, 89%, 90%), Argentina (ARG, 82%, 87%), and others. The upper-left quadrant (high vaccination, low screening) includes Chile (CHL, 46%, 94%), Brazil (BRA, 34%, 77%), and Dominica (DMA, 33%, 85%). The lower-right quadrant (low vaccination, high screening) includes St. Vincent (VCT, 89%, 11%), Antigua (ATG, 84%, 11%), Dominican Republic (DOM, 79%, 10%), and Mexico (MEX, 88%, 44%). The lower-left quadrant (low on both) includes Jamaica (JAM, 26%, 23%), Colombia (COL, 55%, 31%), and Guyana (GUY, 18%, 37%).
