Despite some progress in the 2018 and 2019 elections, Whites are still overrepresented

In early 2018, 74 percent of elected officials were White. By 2020, the share of White elected officials in the region decreased to 71 percent. But Whites are still overrepresented among local elected officials as just 40 percent of the region’s population is White.
