Back-to-school inflation

The cost of buying back-to-school supplies, based on one economist's measure, tends to lag overall inflation. Average prices on back-to-school items like new backpacks, laptops and clothes actually fell at an annualized pace for much of the 2010s. As of July, back-to-school supplies were up about 5.1% from a year earlier, compared with 8.5% for overall inflation.

The back-to-school supplies index is an equally weighted average of the consumer prices for backpacks, boys' and girls' clothing, shoes and stationary, and producer prices for pencils and markers.
