Comparing rents in California's largest cities

Fresno has the second-lowest median monthly rent for apartments among California's 20 largest cities, and the lowest median monthly rent for single-family homes. Yet the city's lower median household income means a larger share of people are paying 30 percent or more of their income on rent and utilities.

Apartments include all units, regardless of number of bedrooms, in buildings or complexes with five or more units. The median rate reflects the midpoint at which half of renters pay more and half pay less. Figures are for November 2018.
