Most Immigrants Facing Deportation Have No Lawyer

Even before Trump took office for his second term, there were too few attorneys to meet the needs of a growing number of immigrants in deportation proceedings. Today, immigrants are even less likely to find lawyers.

This graph shows the percentage of immigrants represented by lawyers in deportation cases filed in the nation's immigration courts through July 2025. These data reflect new cases. Immigrants sometimes hire lawyers later on, as the case proceeds.
