The spread between spot linehaul rates in generally higher-rate, higher-cost reefer and flatbed segments quickly turned to the negative for reefer operations when fuel prices skyrocketed early this year. These rates, national averages tracked by DAT Freight & Analytics, subtract an average fuel surcharge to illustrate the underlying rate for freight movement. For the most recent week, that imputed surcharge was calculated at 70 cents a mile for van freight, 76 cents for reefers, and 84 for flatbed. Rates here are charted per-mile in dollars.
