How much did recall candidates spend per vote?

Candidates who ran to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom in last year's failed recall election were required to report their final expenses on Jan. 31. The filings show several top contenders spent heavily to receive a relatively small share of the vote — while others gained traction after spending almost nothing.

Spending totals include contributions made to the candidates’ 2021 and 2022 campaigns for governor, as well as their ballot measure committees. Newsom's total reflects what his campaign spent to fight the recall; he was not a candidate on the ballot. Totals do not include independent expenditures. Data last updated Feb. 1, 2022.
