Idaho defense attorney caseloads

Idaho caps annual caseloads at 210 “felony-equivalent” cases, or FCEs (definition below), per public defender or private attorney taking public defense case assignments. The chart below shows the number of attorneys who handled more than 50 FCEs during fiscal year 2021. The gray range shows how many attorneys exceeded the FCE cap. For example, 37 attorneys tackled between 251 and 300 felony-equivalent cases that year. An additional 213 attorneys handled fewer than 50 FCEs.

What are FCEs? Idaho has a calculator to convert case types that require more or less work, such as misdemeanors or juvenile cases, into a “Felony Case Equivalent” for ease of analysis. For example, work for roughly 2.5 misdemeanors equals one felony, according to the calculator.
