Entering 2019, 11 states and the District of Columbia had legalized and regulated sports betting: Arkansas, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia. Native American tribes in New Mexico and Oregon also legally operate betting setups.
Five states joined that group this year, though none of them have operational industries yet: Montana (law was signed on May 3), Tennessee (May 24), New Hampshire (June 13), Illinois (June 28) and North Carolina (July 26).
