Health Status Improved After Medi-Cal Expansion to Undocumented Children

The chart shows depicts four bars, grouped together by non-citizen children and citizen children. Within each group, two bars show the percent of children who reported excellent health status before and after the Medi-Cal expansion. For non-citizen children, the rate increased from 20.4% to 30%. For citizen children the change was minimal with an increase from 37.7% to 38.4%.
Note: The period before expansion uses pooled data from 2013-2015 and after expansion uses 2017-2019 data. The year of the Medi-Cal expansion to undocumented children 2016 is excluded. Medi-Cal-Eligible refers to children with family incomes at or below 266% of the Federal Poverty Level. Due to sample limitations, the comparison with children at all income levels is provided and shows a similar trend, with a change that is statistically significant at the 95% confidence level (**) for non-citizen children.
