New Jersey deaths outpace official coronavirus count

Since the disease's outbreak, overall deaths in New Jersey have skyrocketed compared to previous years. New Jersey attributed 8,952 deaths to COVID-19 in the 10-week period ending May 7, but mortality figures suggest that number could be understated by nearly 25%.

Excess deaths compare March 1 through May 7 to the average deaths in those 10 weeks in 2015 through 2019.
