Only a small fraction of the plastic in US municipal solid waste is recycled
U.S. households throw away more than 35 million tons of plastic yearly. In 2018 only 3,090 tons of it was recycled (8.7%). Most plastic waste goes to landfills, where it can escape into the environment and end up in the ocean.
