A rising number of local communities have over-exploited or critical groundwater level

Number of blocks/talukas based on stage of groundwater extraction

The amount of groundwater being used as a share of the amount that can be replenished is known as the "stage of extraction". It is categorized as safe at levels less than 70%, semi-critical at 70-90%, and critical at 90-100%. "Over-exploited" refers to water extraction exceeding the annually replenishable groundwater recharge.
