This line chart shows union membership rates — the percentage of employees who are union members — by sex from 1983 to 2022. Men's union membership stayed basically flat between 2021 and 2022, while women's union membership declined to 2019 levels. While the union membership rate for men has historically been much higher than the rate for women, the gap has narrowed over time. It widened slightly between 2021 and 2022, however, and is now one percentage point.
