How many children drown?

In North Carolina from 2020 to 2024, 135 children 17 and under died from accidental drownings. That's one in five of all drowning deaths here. But children account for two-thirds of all swimming pool drownings including children who fall into the water.

Conversely, adults account for 82% or more of all other types of drownings.
