How can WIC be improved?

Participants' free responses were organized into the following suggestions. Suggestions highlighted in red were provided by >100 participants, suggestions highlighted in yellow were provided by >10 participants.

Table with 2 columns and 15 rows.
Increase food options (food types, brands)“Lot of times the WIC items are not available or sold out. Because of this sometimes the benefits expire without ever being purchased. There should be more brands available to choose from to help prevent this.”
Increase benefits; let benefits roll over; increase deposits per month“Unused benefits should roll over because sometimes like during winter people can't get out as often or store is out of town hard to save gas to go shop.”
Raise age cut off for children“Up the age limits. Sometimes those in need of fruits and vegetables have children who are over the age of 5.”
Improve in-store checkout process and accept at more stores“When I'm at the store, I choose foods that are labeled WIC, but when I swipe my WIC card, they are not qualified. The part of the process is very unclear and often causes me issues at the register.”
Provide more formula and formula options“More variety better choices for formula. Not so particular about sizes etc.”
Better account for cultural and dietary differences“My children have celiac disease and I wasn't able to use a lot of the products wic provided. It would be helpful if more foods were available like gluten free options.”
Improve customer service at WIC office“Could have been more organized and professional too, the process to get your funds and waiting and classes you have to go through to get funds is a lot to deal with. I hated going.”
Expand sizes of products eligible for purchase“Not be so selective on the brand or size container because small towns often don't carry that exact product so we can't always use all of our benefits.”
Clarify process to activate and use benefits“Making items more simpler for individuals that use it for the first time.”
Make educational materials more accessible“Give a notice in advance about their educational class online. 1-2 days isn't enough when you have a toddler who wants constant attention.”
Continue virtual appointments; offer home visits“More modern ways to connect with clients through the app and phone calls. Sometimes it's hard to travel and afford gas to appointments.”
Make WIC use available for online purchases and delivery“It would be nice if I could use WIC for my online pick ups the same way I can use EBT or a debit card. When I get an online pick up I still have to go into the store to get the things that I can get using my wic card. It would be nice to just be able to get it all at the same time so that I don't have to go into the store.”
Expand eligibility“I wish more families were eligible. We only qualify because of Medicaid which we will be losing.”
Make available to fathers“They can improve by giving WIC to single fathers too.”
Reduce stigma"Speaking of dehumanizing, having to do education modules to earn the food assistance poor families need is incredibly condescending. I think there's something insidious to be said about forcing impoverished families to jump through hoops to get a sliver more help."
