In California, current state law requires a thorough environmental review and safety analysis for all new public schools proposed to be built within a quarter mile of facilities known to emit air pollution. Private and charter schools are not subject to those regulations, however, Assembly Bill 762 would expand those rules to private and charter schools. The NBC Bay Area Investigative Unit obtained and analyzed data from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the California Dept. of Education to determine how many public, private and charter schools in the 9-county Bay Area are within a quarter mile of known sources of air pollution.
