The Great Fertility Divide: America's Highest and Lowest Birth Rate States
Fertility rate reflects the number of live births per 1,000 women of childbearing age (ages 15 to 44) in each state in 2024. Unlike raw birth counts, fertility rates account for population size, making them a more accurate measure of childbearing activity across states of varying populations. A higher fertility rate indicates that women in that state are having babies at a greater rate relative to the female population, not simply that more babies were born there overall. The national fertility rate in 2024 stood at 53.8 births per 1,000 women.
