People leaving the Bay are in worse financial shape than their neighbors

Average characteristics of Bay Area leavers and stayers from the same neighborhoods

The data come from comparing the average characteristics of people from the same neighborhood (Census tract) who leave the Bay Area and people who stay. We re-weight these differences by the number of leavers from each neighborhood so that the reported data reflect the characteristics of the average leaver. The sample consists of people in the UC-CCP between 2014 and 2025 who resided in a Bay Area neighborhood with at least one out-of-state mover and one non-mover in a given quarter. Student and auto debt levels are inflated to 2025 Q4 dollars.
