Charity Care Spending at MN Hospital Systems

Since Nov. 2023, Minnesota law requires hospitals to screen patients for their charity care eligibility before taking certain actions to recoup medical debt. During the law's first full year in effect, 7 of the 9 hospital systems displayed here increased their charity care spending.

**Total for HealthPartners' Minnesota hospitals only: Olivia, Hutchinson Health, Lakeview, Regions and Methodist. All other totals reflect all hospitals within each health system, including their hospitals outside of Minnesota. Note: CentraCare and Essentia Health observe fiscal years that begin in July. The CentraCare data in this chart reflect Form 990s filed for FY 2019 (July 2019-June 2020) through FY 2023 (July 2023-June 2024). The Essentia data in this chart are for FY 2021 through FY 2025. All other health systems use the calendar year for their fiscal years.
