This map relies on existing published lists (see sources) covering both successful and unsuccessful campaigns that include one or more of the following activities aimed at substantially altering a state's political leadership: assassinations; sponsoring coup d'états; aiding, funding, or arming anti-government agents; and election interference. Note that many of the countries targeted by the United States were democracies.
