Race and Security Levels in Pennsylvania Prisons

Pennsylvania classifies its state prisons into four security levels. At maximum-security facilities for men, 60% of prisoners are Black, compared with 47% of all Pennsylvania state prisoners and 10% of Black adults in the state. In minimum-security facilities, more than 60% of prisoners are white.

The Pa. Dept. of Corrections does not classify prisoners by Hispanic origin, who can be of any race.
