Maximum Potential of Emissions Reduction Levers for Primary Chemical Production (Well-to-Gate)

Emissions reduction (%) from the share of total emissions from the production of hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, ethylene, propylene, and benzene in the United States. In 2050, based on current growth assumptions, the total emissions are expected to be 444 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents.

*Calculations assume the waste management baseline is landfilling with sufficient controls to meet regulatory expectations of low emissions. Several landfills likely do not meet low emissions assumptions (see RMI's WasteMap for more information). Our estimates do not take credit for avoided emissions from higher intensity waste pathways due to insufficient measurements.
