Sales tax receipts are the new engine driving CT's transportation program

Sales tax receipts have surpassed fuel taxes as the single-largest source of revenue for the state budget's Special Transportation Fund. And while fuel receipts have been stagnant for many years, sales tax revenues are rising and are projected to continue doing so. (The fund also receives revenue from various motor vehicle-related fees, a highway mileage tax on large commercial trucks and from federal grants.)

Fuel tax revenues reduced by temporary gas tax holiday in 2022 and 2023. Figures for 2023 through 2026 are projections.
