Scientists presented volunteers with descriptions of a crime and asked them what punishment they'd assign the defendant. Compared to a baseline reading when there were no extenuating mental health circumstances, brain evidence led volunteers to decrease prison terms but to drastically increase involuntary hospitalization time, especially if they were led to believe the condition was untreatable.
