English language arts proficiency across Nebraska schools

Students in grades 3-8 were tested annually in English Language Arts, including reading and writing, in all of Nebraska's 244 public school districts in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years. High school juniors were assessed through the annual ACT. More than half of students in grade 3 were proficient in ELA in 127 districts (52%) in 2021-22. In 2022-23, more than half of students in 194 districts (80%) were proficient. The increase was in part due to revamped tests that led to new "cut scores" to define "proficiency." Data was masked for 25 districts (10%) for privacy reasons, such as if 10 or fewer students took the test.
