Predicted Probability of Poor Health by Level of Earnings Volatility Experienced
The sample includes workers who appear across all months and report at least some earnings within a year. The analysis limits the sample to workers aged 24 and older because younger adults may still qualify for dependent coverage or be enrolled in full-time education.
Poor health at year-end is defined as workers rating their health as fair or poor on a five-level self-reported scale. Earning volatility is calculated as the SD of arc percent change of a worker’s monthly earnings. The models control for workers’ age, gender, education, race/ethnicity, industry, baseline health status, income level, whether workers live in a household with children and included state and year fixed effects. Only difference between high-volatility and low-volatility groups is statistically significant. *** p<0.001, ** p<0.01
