Israel and the Palestinian territories

The occupied West Bank is divided into three areas, with most of it under direct Israeli rather than Palestinian Authority control. Gaza is run by the Hamas movement.

*Area A (18% of the West Bank) is fully controlled by the Palestinian Authority (PA). Area B (22%) is run by both Israel and the PA, with Israel maintaining security control. Areas A and B are fragmented into 166 separate enclaves. Area C is fully controlled by Israel and includes settlements. Israel captured the Syrian Golan Heights in 1967 and annexed the territory in 1981.
