Cardiovascular Risk Index Increases With the Average Percent of Black Americans in Southern States

A cardiovascular risk index score closer to 0 is considered low risk, and a score closer to 6 is considered high risk.

Only Southern U.S. states that had counties with at least a 14.2% Black American population are included (AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA). The average percent of Black Americans and the average cardiovascular risk index scores are calculated from these counties. Population estimates obtained from the 2020 Decennial Census Redistricting Data. Additional details are available in the methodology section of article.
