The 10 subway stations with the highest concentrations of fine particulate matter

Researchers at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine wanted to see if air pollution was worse at subway stations near river tunnels compared to stations just a few stops inland or near bridges.

They studied air quality on subway platforms at 59 transit stations around New York City during rush hour. This chart shows a list of the top-10 stations with the highest levels of PM2.5, a type of air pollution made of fine particles.

PM2.5 is expressed in micrograms per cubic meter. The study also examined PATH stations, including two stops in Jersey City.
