Solar & semiconductor manufacturing investment since 2021

Most semiconductor manufacturing investments noted here are larger in dollar amount than solar manufacturing investments—though the number of individual solar manufacturing investments listed here is higher. As shown below, solar manufacturing investments and semiconductor manufacturing investments are often located in the same regions. Hover over investment bubbles for tooltips containing solar manufacturing feasibility insights from RMI's Clean Growth Tool.

Most solar manufacturing investments fall into the 'Solar Energy Components' category in RMI's Clean Growth Tool—but not all. There are a few investments listed on this map that are for solar inverters, which would fall under the 'Energy Transmission Equipment' category. For the most part, though, investments listed on this map involve the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes for 'Semiconductor and Related Device Manufacturing' (which includes photovoltaic cell manufacturing) and 'Custom Roll Forming', the two industry inputs to 'Solar Energy Components' in RMI's Clean Growth Tool. The overlap in NAICS between photovoltaic cell manufacturing and 'typical' semiconductor manufacturing reflects a real-life similarity in the manufacturing process. There may be slight data redundancies resulting from synthesis of multiple data sources.
