The Gazette and Investigate Midwest analyzed 8,800 monitoring results for microcystins that were collected from 2006 to 2022 between May and August of each year in Iowa. We counted how many times the results surpassed the state threshold — 8 micrograms of microcystins per liter of water — each year. We only considered the first monitoring test administered at each beach for each week.
