Whether people of color are more likely to walk to work varies significantly between cities. Low rates of walking to work within a city and lower percentages of people of color among commuters appear to be associated with an over-representation of people of color among people who walk to work. This chart shows that relationship for 75 cities in all 50 states.
While the ability to regularly walk to work may be seen as an amenity, it may also be indicative of a lack of alternative options such as access to a car. The focus of of most US transportation policy towards automobiles means that a disproportionate reliance on walking can be an indicator of limited access to opportunity.
