Monthly Bills Spike in 2022

Utility bills have been generally trending downward for the last 15 years, largely because of declining energy costs. Customers have experienced a sharp increase this year, reflecting global increases in natural gas prices. While energy prices were falling, regulators encouraged utilities to step up infrastructure investments, causing rate increases that have partly offset lower energy prices. The cost of the energy, which once accounted for the lion's share of a residential utility bills, now typically accounts for less than half.
