Not surprisingly, children from the wealthiest families are vastly overrepresented at Ivy League and similarly prestigious colleges, while children from the least wealthy families are greatly underrepresented there. Only 4 percent of students enrolled in Ivy League and similar colleges come from the bottom 20 percent of the national income distribution for parental income among those in their birth cohorts, while 14 percent come from the top one percent. At nonselective four-year public colleges, representation of students from the lowest-income families is far closer to being proportional to their share of the population.
