Thoroughbred Deaths per 1,000 starts

Nationally, thoroughbred deaths from racing are down about a third since 2009, according to data from the Equine Injury Database, a database that tracks races across the country. The deaths include horses that were fatally injured within 72 hours of a race, or died suddenly on the track.
