A record number of New York State's utility customers were in debt last summer.

Many customers, still recovering from the shock of pandemic-fueled unemployment, are behind on their utility bills.

Data is self-reported by regulated utility companies in New York State to the Department of Public Service. Individual reports were compiled to calculate the overall number of accounts in arrears.
