The Nicaraguan government ordered 1,545 nongovernmental organizations to cease operating in the first nine months of 2022. It was a major increase from just 51 NGOs being ordered to close in 2021 and far fewer than that in the prior three years. The government has been authorizing new NGOs as well, but in much lower numbers.
